What is a Lap Band?

A laparoscopic adjustable lap band, commonly known as lap band or LAGB is an inflatable device made of silicone placed around the upper part of the stomach. It is used to treat obesity by decreasing food consumption. It is usually used for patients having a BMI above 40. It is also used for patients with BMI 35-40 who have other health conditions that can be made better with weight loss.

The band is inflated using saline. When placed around the upper part of the stomach, it creates a lower stomach pouch. This helps in slowing down the consumption of food at one go. This thereby reduces appetite and the food is consumed slower. Thus, weight loss can be attained. The band is connected to a port kept under the skin of the abdomen, which can inflate and deflate the band by changing the amount of saline.
