Two and a half reasons why people travel to India for treatment!

Posted on June 11th, 2019 by MedPort

As per Govt. of India report, around half a million people travel to India yearly to avail their medical treatment. And most importantly, the number is growing every year. What are the reasons that drive people to travel to India for treatment?

As a part of my research, I browsed through many articles on the Internet regarding what makes India one of the favourite destination for medical tourists. I came through many points such as:

  1. High-quality treatment facilities.
  2. Well qualified doctors.
  3. International standard hospitals.
  4. Low treatment cost.
  5. Latest medical technologies.
  6. Ease of getting medical visa.
  7. Low waiting time.
  8. Blah blah blah….

But, aren’t these offered by other countries too? Then what makes India unique among them?

The right answer to this question should come from patients who have already travelled to India for their medical treatment. As we have a good number of patients whom we have helped in their treatment in India, we decided to contact them. We contacted them directly, over the phone, WhatsApp, email etc. We just asked them to list three reasons for choosing India over other countries for their treatment. The first two reasons for 87% of them were the same. So here are the two and a half reasons why people travel to India for their medical treatment.

1. Highly experienced doctors:

Indian medical system has well-qualified doctors supported by excellent medical infrastructure and latest technologies. But what makes Indian doctors stand ahead among their counterparts is their experience. Thanks to the high population and low doctor-patient ratio, Indian doctors every day consult the highest number of patients with a wide variety of medical conditions. In fact, they have hands-on experience in handling with almost all the diseases under their domain. This experience makes them easy to diagnose the disease and provide excellent treatment for international patients too.

2. Lower treatment cost:

According to patients beyond border, the treatment cost in India is approximately 80% lower compared to the cost of treatment for the same in the US. So even after considering travel and accommodation costs, a person can save thousands of dollars if treated in India.

2.5. Alternative treatments:

India is the home for alternative medical treatment such as Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Yoga etc. Now there is increased demand for such treatments around the globe. So many foreigners pack their bag to avail these treatments in India. However, the number of patients opting alternative treatment is much lower than that of modern medicine, so we give it a 0.5 valuation.
